DIY Flashlight

Skills: lathe, mill

Through 2.S670 – Mechanical Engineering Tools, I learned how to operate a lathe and mill by building a flashlight. The first part is to build a handle which houses a AA battery. This involves turning down an aluminum rod on the lathe, knurling it to create a textured grip, and making a die cut.

The head of flashlight was made on a mill. I messed up my first attempt by moving the mill in the opposite direction while facing the surface to make a pocket for the lens cover. While it took me longer to finish the flashlight, the extra time I spent on the mill made me more comfortable using it.
