Lathe

Z-axis power feed clutch mechanism on the bottom left. Flexure for X-axis motion, leadscrew for Z-axis.

For the class, Elements of Mechanical Design, I learned about bearings, bolts, belts, flexures, and gears which we then use as teams to design, build, and characterize a lathe.

The final competition was turning 3 aluminum rods. The scoring formula was based on material removal rate and accuracy (diameter and taper error).

My teammate, Jeff, during the competition using the power feed. As a grad student team, we were required to have an extra design feature. Although a Z-axis power feed wasn’t an easy option, it did help us win the competition.
